IN many cultures owls are seen as bad omens and forerunners of death. In Africa, but also in the Americas, it was believed that when a owl hooted, someone was going to die. Luckily the owls on this page can’t make a sound. The sketches are from the book ‘The birds of eastern North America’, published in 1881. The author C.J. Maynard also made the drawings. I found them in online archives of the NYPL.
